Looking for Descendents of Japanese Canadian Families from Northern Vancouver Island

The Museum at Campbell River and North Island College are each undertaking projects to uncover and share the histories of Japanese Canadian families who lived on northern Vancouver Island and the surrounding islands prior to World War II.

We are interested in finding descendants from the following areas:

Alert Bay (Cormorant Island)
Bloedel
Campbell River
Cortes Island
Englewood
Gold River
Menzies Bay

Quadra Island
Read Island
East and West Redonda Islands
Port Alice
Port Hardy
Port McNeil
Rivers Inlet

Sayward
Sointula (Malcom Island)
Tahsis
Telegraph Cove
Woss
Zeballos

who are willing to share histories, photographs and/or family stories.

The Museum at Campbell River’s Project

The Museum is currently working to create new interpretive signage to expand upon the Soyokaze exhibit, as well as to expand their archives and knowledge base.

North Island College’s Project

NIC is writing a book that will document the communities on Vancouver Island that were home to over 3,000 Japanese Canadians before the Second World War.
