Health Urgent Guide Services (H.U.G.S.) for Japanese Canadian Survivors

Seniors Health & Wellness • February 5, 2023

H.U.G.S. is for Japanese Canadian Survivors of internment and displacement living in the Lower Mainland who find themselves facing urgent health and wellness needs.

We are a free service that assists Survivors to find resources, apply for services, create plans, and even pay for solutions to urgent short-term challenges.

My name is Yvonne Yoshiko Nakano. I’m the manager of a new program initiated and funded by the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society and operated by the Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society. I’m writing because our program, called H.U.G.S., might be able to help you or someone you know.

H.U.G.S. can assist with

•    Healthcare access and planning
•    Resources for primary caregiver support
•    Transportation services
•    Housekeeping and food services
•    Assistive devices for home safety and independence
•    Medication and medication management
•    Access to housing
•    Referral to social and cultural groups and programs
•    Dental and denturist care
•    Vision care, including glasses
•    Hearing care and hearing aid repairs
•    Minor home repairs
•    Estate planning
•    Other short-term urgent needs

Are you eligible?

Survivors born on April 1, 1949 or earlier who are now living in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia can apply to the program in person, by phone or email. Family members or friends of the survivor can also initiate the application.

If you or someone you know might benefit from this service, please contact H.U.G.S. by phone at 604.777.5000 ext. 2109 or by email at hugsassistant@nikkeishc.com.

We are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.  We start accepting applications on May 15, 2023.

Japanese Canadian Legacies are initiatives that honour our elders past and present. We are grateful to be doing this work on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
