Edmonton Kitchen Renovation Launch

Infrastructure • May 9, 2025

On Sunday, April 13, 2025, the Edmonton Japanese Community Association (EJCA) celebrated the completion of the Kitchen Renovation project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house. The Kitchen Renovation, which got underway in July 2023, was funded by an Building Improvement Infrastructure grant from the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society.

Held at the Argyll Community League (ACL) in partnership with the Edmonton Japanese Community Association (EJCA), the event included an opportunity for community members to contribute feedback on how to make the best use of the upgraded facility.  Congratulations to Sanae Ohki for your leadership on this project along with the EJCA board and membership.

As thr postwar home for many Japanese Canadians who were exiled from the coast in 1942 and chose not to return in 1949 once restrictions were lifted, Edmonton has a thriving community that gathers regularly for cultural and social activities. This newly renovated kitchen will be a hub of activity and EJCA members anticipate enjoying the facility and professional quality equipment many years to come.

Japanese Canadian Legacies are initiatives that honour our elders past and present. We are grateful to be doing this work on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
