City of Prince Rupert – Call for Photographs & Stories

BC Heritage Sites • October 7, 2024

The City of Prince Rupert and our community partners are conducting historical research into the Japanese Canadian community of Prince Rupert before and after their forced uprooting from our region.  With support from the Japanese Canadian Legacies Fund, we are developing a memorial project in Mariners Park to provide a contemplative space that gives residents and visitors alike the opportunity to sit and reflect on the history of Japanese internment in Canada, as well as the specific contributions and stories of the Japanese Canadian population of Prince Rupert.

Call for photographs + stories from Prince Rupert and the Skeena River area

As part of  our design team’s initial research, we are looking for more photos of Prince Rupert’s Japanese Canadian residents going about their daily lives, especially related to boatbuilding and/or fishing. We are interested in any photos you might be willing to share, especially photos with people in them and any backstory available on the people and their families. Additionally, if you have any narratives or stories regarding the history of your family in this area, we would love to hear those as well.

We also have a number of photos of unknown residents, we would appreciate community support to identify folks in the attached images.

If you have photographs or narratives fitting the description above that you are willing to share with the City of Prince Rupert to help inform this project, please contact us with the following information:

• Your name and the family name of your relative and/or people in the photographs or stories if you are willing to share them(full names if available)

• (Where applicable) Reference images of the photographs (eg. take photos of the photographs with your phone or tablet; if there are a large number, a few samples is fine with a note about approximate total number and general description of contents)

Japanese Canadian Legacies are initiatives that honour our elders past and present. We are grateful to be doing this work on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
