Searching for Descendants of Boat Building Families from Steveston and Richmond

Do you have family members who built boats in Steveston before 1942? The City of Richmond is gathering information on Japanese Canadian boat works in Steveston.

We are especially interested in hearing from families who did not return to Steveston after internment and are looking to collect stories of Japanese boat builders that have been lost to time. Photos, documents or objects related to these stories are welcome.

With your permission, these stories may be used in an upcoming exhibit at Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site in Steveston, or in future heritage projects by the City of Richmond.

Please contact us ff you have family stories you are willing to share.

Japanese Canadian Legacies are initiatives that honour our elders past and present. We are grateful to be doing this work on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
