Online Sedai Oral History Workshop February 8

Intergenerational Wellness • January 6, 2026

February 16 is Family Day in most provinces, and the JCCC is offering a free online workshop on how to interview family members. Learn about interviewing skills, what kind of questions to ask, how to talk about consent, and what equipment to use to record.

Sedai Oral History Workshop
Sunday February 8, 4pm – 6pm (EST)
Location: online

Cost: free

The workshop will be facilitated by Karen Suzuki, Sedai Outreach and Education Coordinator and a mixed race yonsei. Before joining the JCCC Heritage Team, Karen worked in film and television as a VFX project manager and has produced and directed several film projects, including a documentary about being half Japanese for which she interviewed her nisei grandparents. Karen believes in learning by doing and strives to make her workshops as interactive and hands-on as possible. When not at the JCCC, Karen can be found teaching Wing Chun kung fu and drumming with RAW Taiko.

Oral histories are an excellent way to preserve the stories of family and community and an opportunity to learn about history through first-hand experiences. The JCCC has been interviewing Japanese Canadians for over 20 years for the Sedai Oral History Collection. Sedai houses over 200 oral histories, each containing priceless memories and stories about the lives of Japanese Canadians.

We gratefully acknowledge support from the Community Fund of the Japanese Canadian Legacies Society.

Japanese Canadian Legacies are initiatives that honour our elders past and present. We are grateful to be doing this work on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples.
